Yep! In 2014, the International Dark Sky Association designated Oracle as an International Dark Sky Park because of the high quality viewpoints and very low light pollution. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the house and learn about the fascinating and charitable history of the Kannally family, who lived and worked on the ranch for over 50 years.

Outdoor Tip: Bring a pair of binoculars to more easily see the birds and wildlife in the park. Besides robust populations of javelina and Coues whitetail deer, the park is home to fantastic birding opportunities for resident and migrating birds. Patagonia Lake…A Desert Oasis – Best Birding and Fishing in Southern Arizona

Patagonia Lake State Park is a true gem for anyone seeking a memorable birding or fishing experience this spring. Experienced or aspiring birdwatchers will be delighted to hear that this park is the best birding location in southern Arizona for a variety of exciting bird species. For those looking to stay overnight, there are campgrounds near the lake and cabins with an expansive view. Be sure to also check out the nearby trails at Sonoita Creek State Natural Area and bring your binoculars for all the birds and wildlife viewing. The park hosts free guided bird walks regularly to showcase the wide variety of species in the area. 

Southern Arizona’s rich history is on display at nearby Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. The short 40-minute drive from Patagonia is lined with picturesque views of Sky Island country and opportunities to see unique area birds and wildlife.  

Thanks to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, rainbow trout are stocked in the lake from October through March. In addition to fantastic fall through spring trout fishing, anglers can target other species like largemouth bass, bluegill, and two catfish species (channel and flathead catfish). Giant flathead catfish weighing up to nearly 60 pounds live in the depths of this Southern Arizona lake and are caught on occasion. Please keep smaller flatheads if you're so inclined and return the giant fish to the lake so they can breed and keep this renewable resource strong for future generations.  

Outdoor Tip: Don’t forget your binoculars on a trip anywhere in Southern Arizona, especially Patagonia Lake State Park. It’s not a matter of if you’ll see something notable for a closer look, but when! Use a chest harness to comfortably and safely secure your binoculars for worry-free exploring.

Kartchner Caverns – So Much More than Arizona’s Best Cave Experience

Kartchner is right at the base of one of southern Arizona’s notable Sky Island mountain ranges. A variety of scenic shared use trails lead deep into the Whetstone Mountains right from the park. Look for interesting species from the trail like Coues whitetail deer and coatimundi, or turn your attention to the large variety of birds during the spring migration as the breeders are settling in from April through June. and interesting plant life that call the area home. 

Outdoor Tip: Some of the trails that lead into the Whetstone Mountains from the park enter Coronado National Forest, where trails aren’t marked well. Use a mapping app on your phone that provides “blue dot” location technology regardless of connectivity.

Unwind at Roper Lake – Arizona's Most Relaxing Adventure

Roper Lake State Park is a wonderful place to visit if you are looking for a peaceful and enjoyable outdoor experience. The Arizona Game and Fish Department stocks Roper Lake (and nearby Dankworth Pond) with healthy, beautiful, and delicious rainbow trout from fall through spring. What’s more relaxing than taking in a sunset while catching a rainbow? Mt. Graham looms in the distance and access to this towering Sky Island peak is right up the road from Roper Lake. History on a Hill at Jerome State Historic Park – Get to Know This Historic Mining Town!

Jerome State Historic Park is one of the most fascinating attractions in the Jerome area. This historic park offers visitors a vivid glimpse into the rich copper mining history of Jerome, Arizona and the Douglas Mansion, which serves as the museum with interactive displays and exhibits This museum is regarded as one of the cleanest and most expansive curations of western mining history in Arizona! Feel Alive at Dead Horse Ranch – Central Arizona’s Favorite Outdoor Recreation Destination!

Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a fantastic destination for families or anyone looking for a deeper connection to nature. Feeling adventurous? Try the Lime-Kiln Trail on for size! This shared use trail traverses the high desert country north of the park and eventually connects to Red Rock State Park 13 miles away! Park a vehicle at both ends for a one way experience or camp out somewhere in the wilderness and return to the park when you’re done.
