First Flight: Birding for Beginners

Lost Dutchman State Park

Friday, January 16, 2026   8 a.m.

A brown and white speckled cactus wren perches on a jojoba plant with green leaves.

Ever wondered who's singing at sunrise? Learn all about it on our guided "First Flight" hike with Arizona State Parks Intern and Maricopa Bird Alliance Chairperson, Sierra! We'll cover the essentials: how to use binoculars, how to listen for clues, and how to identify common Arizona birds.

This program is welcome for ages 12+ and is first come, first served (max 15 people). A limited number of binoculars are available to borrow. Wear sturdy shoes and prepare for uneven terrain and loose gravel as we walk for about 60-90 minutes.

Meet in the Palo Verde Ramada. This program is free with park admission, annual pass, or camping.

This event is part of Outdoors250, a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and Arizona’s natural heritage. By participating in this event, you can enter to win Outdoors250 prizes by signing up at AZStateParks.com/Outdoors250.
