Alamo OHV Ambassador Show Me Ride (McCracken Cabin and Mine)

Alamo Lake State Park

Wednesday, February 18, 2026   8:30 a.m.

A line of off road vehicles driving up a sandy wash in between canyon walls.

Ride Summary:

This is about a 70 mile out and back Track.  You will leave from the Alamo State Park campground and proceed to Maggie's Wash, McCracken Cabin and Mine, and then return back through Maggie’s Wash to Alamo Lake.  Have a full tank of fuel, bring lunch, snacks, and beverages.

Ride Details:

You will head out from Camping Area 'C' onto the trail from the designated OHV Trailhead, head across to the upper wash/river at the East end of Alamo Lake, proceed past the "Bus Stop" towards Maggie's Wash. Maggie's Wash is a beautiful slot canyon that 4-seat Side x Sides will find a bit tight but doable.  There are two side hiking slot canyons, one on the west side just past the entrance to Maggie's Wash and the other about two-thirds up Maggie's Wash on the East side.  Both are easy walks and very scenic.  Plan on doing one on the way up and one on the way back as time permits.

After exiting Maggie's Wash at the north end, you will head north towards McCracken Mine and Cabin. This is a good spot to have lunch.  The cabin is in really good condition, and the views of Yucca Valley are amazing. Due east, you can see the Bagdad Mine in the distance. For the adventurous, there are times when the mine entrance is accessible, and there are mine shafts and mine shoots to check out.

The return track comes back through Maggie's wash and heads past the "Bus Stop" to go back to Alamo Lake State Park. It is always amazing how different the views of Maggie's Wash are just by going through it two different directions!
