Lunar Eclipse Night at Oracle State Park
Oracle State Park
Thursday, August 27, 2026 7-10 p.m.
Experience one of the year's most impressive celestial events at Oracle State Park as the moon passes through Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse!
The evening begins with a presentation by park volunteer, amateur astronomer, and dark sky advocate Mike Weasner, who will explain how lunar eclipses occur, why each one is unique, and what to watch for throughout the night. As the eclipse begins, visitors will have the opportunity to observe the moon both with the naked eye and through a park telescope while its appearance gradually changes over the course of the evening. Park staff and volunteers will be available to answer questions and help guests enjoy the experience.
At 9:15 p.m., the eclipse reaches its maximum, with 96% of the moon covered by Earth's shadow. At this point, only a thin sliver of the moon will remain in direct sunlight, while the rest of the lunar surface takes on a dim coppery-red to gray appearance as it is illuminated only by sunlight filtered through Earth's atmosphere. This dramatic contrast makes for an incredible view.
Event Schedule
- 7:00–7:30 p.m.: Presentation by Mike Weasner
- 7:30 p.m.: Partial eclipse begins as the moon rises over the Galiuro Mountains

- 10:00 p.m.: Event concludes
Advance registration is required, and attendance is limited to 50 participants to provide a comfortable viewing experience. We recommend bringing folding chairs and a red flashlight if you have one for seeing in the dark without disturbing your night vision.
