Get involved with conservation work at Kartchner Caverns by joining an upcoming Lint Camp! During these events, volunteers gently brush lint off curbs and rocks near the trail system in the cave using spoolies and UV lights. Lint is a big problem in public caves—even though lint itself is so small! When rangers and visitors walk through the cave on tours, small fibers from fabric, skin cells, hair, and dander is introduced to the cave. Over time, that lint dirties formations and can dissolve or otherwise damage them, and offers a food source for cave invertebrate species they would not find otherwise—essentially junk food for cave life. Volunteers play a crucial role in preserving the cave.

Lint Camps are held in two shifts at 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m. You are welcome to sign up for one or both. We supply all of the equipment and training necessary. Participants must be at least 13 years old with a parent/guardian/chaperone present.

If you’re interested in volunteering on one of the following dates or have questions about this program, please contact our Cave Resource Manager at cballard@azstateparks.gov.
