Resolve to Get Outdoors This Year

January 2, 2025

PHOENIX — If you’re making a New Year’s resolution for 2025, why not resolve to get outdoors more and explore Arizona’s beautiful state parks? Studies show that spending time in nature reduces stress, improves mental clarity, and boosts overall happiness. That sounds like an amazing way to kick off a new year!

Whether you want to learn how to explore the outdoors for the first time or you are a seasoned recreationist looking for new things to try, Arizona State Parks and Trails has you covered. Our amazing outdoor resources guide will help you prepare for your first trip or get you started with a new hobby.

Hiking is an easy way to explore nature at your own pace, and with parks located throughout the state, you can start close to home and then venture out for longer trips. Trails range from easy to moderate, or even to bucket list hikes for well-prepared, adventurous hikers. Try Catalina State Park in Tucson, where 11 trails ranging in difficulty showcase the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Or visit Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, with trails around the three lagoons, along the Verde River, and even stretching between Cottonwood and Sedona.

Hiking can easily lead to bird-watching, and Arizona has some of the best areas to enjoy migrating species during winter and spring. Check out Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, Dankworth Pond State Park, or Red Rock State Park for amazing birding opportunities. Visit the event listing to find bird walks happening at parks near you.

If you’re ready for a weekend getaway, there are 15 camping parks with tent and RV sites waiting for you. If you’re ready for the getaway but not for the tent, try the eight parks with camping cabins and simplify your overnight experience. If you want to try camping but aren’t sure where to start, consider an Arizona Family Campout weekend. This program is designed for beginners and teaches you how to camp and enjoy activities in the parks. Plus, the program provides all the equipment for a fun weekend.

Anytime is a good time to hit the water, and you can start kayaking, canoeing, or boating this year at any of the Arizona state parks located on a lake or river. Plus, several beaches in-state make a sunny vacation closer than you may think.

Resolve to spend less time thinking about fun things to do and more time doing them. Arizona State Parks and Trails helps you connect with nature and explore the beautiful Grand Canyon State any time of the year.
