Make a Resolution: Try New Outdoor Things This Year

January 2, 2024

PHOENIX – January is a time of resolutions and a clean slate to start the new year, so why not make a resolution to explore more in 2024? Trying a new outdoor activity doesn’t have to be difficult, and we’re here to help. If you are already used to spending time in the parks, adding something new to your repertoire can spice it up.

Rent a kayak for some water activities, or get your fishing license online and head out to one of the lake or river parks to try your luck (and enjoy the scenery). Maybe you’re ready to visit a different state park than you’re used to. Is there a trail that you haven’t hiked yet, but heard about and wanted to try? This is a fantastic opportunity to grab a friend (and your water) and head out. Check out our resources online.

If you haven’t spent much time outside but want to ease into it, it’s as easy as figuring out what you’d like to try. Hiking trails offer a great way to enjoy fresh air, see spectacular views, and even spot wildlife, without much of a commitment for equipment or time. You can choose an easy hike to get started, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and bring a reusable water bottle and you’re ready to go. Remember to stick to the trail, tell a friend where you’re going (or take a friend with you), and download or pack the trail map before your trip.

If you’d like to camp with your family, joining in on one of the Arizona Family Campout weekends would be a great intro, with all the equipment provided by Arizona State Parks and Trails. If you are RV or tent ready and want to head out, check out these great tips and tricks to having a comfortable camping experience. Plus, there are eight Arizona state parks that feature cozy camping cabins. All you need to do is pack your bedding (or sleeping bag), food for your trip, and your personal items, and you can enjoy the outdoors from a climate-controlled cabin site.

Whether you want to go to a park for a quick day trip or plan to spend the night, trying something new is as easy as visiting the website, choosing the right park for your interests, and then heading out! The most important thing to remember is to be a good steward of the outdoor spaces you visit. Practice responsible recreation, pack out everything that you brought in, and leave everything as you found it (no picking flowers, gathering wood, or taking home that cool rock). Learning to enjoy the outdoors can help create some awesome memories in 2024.
