Cool Rides: Exploring Eastern Arizona's OHV Trails

August 2, 2024

Arizona summers can be blisteringly hot in many of the state’s regions and a ride through the desert would likely be uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous. Luckily, this state is stacked with diverse, high elevation regions that offer respite from the heat and allow OHV enthusiasts to explore beautiful places where temperatures are more forgiving. Eastern Arizona’s White Mountains fit the bill to allow all day trail exploration without severe risk of heat-related illness.

Explore the High Elevation Trails

The White Mountains area is a haven for OHV enthusiasts. With trails that wind through lush alpine forests that offer stunning vistas and a chance to encounter a variety of wildlife, it's easy to see why this region is a top destination for off-road adventures. The Big Lake area is loaded with off-highway opportunities and plenty of great spot to camp and extend your adventure. Don’t forget your trout fishing gear…Besides Big Lake, there are a number of great trout fishing opportunities available throughout the area.

Stay Cool and Ride Safe

One of the key advantages of riding in these high-elevation areas is the cooler temperatures. Not only does this make for a more comfortable ride, but it also significantly enhances safety. High temperatures can be dangerous, causing heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be especially risky when you're far from help. By choosing to ride in the cooler elevations of Eastern Arizona during the summer months, you can enjoy your adventure without the added stress of extreme heat.

Ride Responsibly

This past June, Arizona State Parks and Trails Off-Highway Vehicle Division partnered with the Arizona Office of Tourism, Tread Lightly!, the Off-Highway Vehicle Advisory Group, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department to promote the avoidance of sensitive areas to protect wildlife habitat and waters by staying on trails. This State Parks Board approved project was funded by a $200K grant from Arizona State Parks and Trails, which was matched by the Arizona Office of Tourism totaling $400K. Keep an eye out for this exciting program to be released later this year!
