Celebrate America's Semiquincentennial with Outdoors250 Initiative
January 8, 2026
PHOENIX — Arizona State Parks and Trails is joining the Secretary of State and the Arizona America250 commission to launch Outdoors250, a six-month initiative to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The initiative aims to encourage Arizonans and visitors from across the country to reflect on our nation’s outdoor heritage, from the stewardship of native peoples to our present outdoor landscape, and connect with nature through recreation and education.
Outdoors250 will encompass Trails250 and Birding250, two categories of fun events for the whole family held throughout the state. Event participants can sign up at AZStateParks.com/Outdoors250 to view qualifying events and win prizes in both categories, including a cabin stay at Patagonia Lake State Park, Vortex Diamondback binoculars, and more!
The initiative launched on New Year’s Day with more than 350 people enjoying fee-free First Day Hikes offered at Arizona’s state parks and will culminate on July 4, 2026 with a nationwide celebration.
“Nature is a big part of our identity and contributes to our mental and physical health,” said Sarah Webber, deputy director of Arizona State Parks and Trails. “Our connection to the outdoors impacts our communities, economy, and public health. Outdoors250 is our invitation to step outside and experience the outdoor legacy that has shaped the nation for more than 250 years. During these programs, our park rangers and program guides will help you reflect on that history and our present-day stewardship. This is our moment to honor that legacy and inspire a new generation's passion for the outdoors.”
Outdoors250 programs will commemorate pivotal moments in the nation's environmental conservation history, with programming to highlight President Theodore Roosevelt's key role in expanding the national park system and establishing the Antiquities Act in 1906, the 1954 creation of Arizona's state parks system, and more.
Outdoors250 and other community-led events will be listed on the Commission's online calendar at America250az.org/events.
