Adaptive Off-Road Mobility Pilot ProgramA man riding a TerrainHopper with a female trail advocate alongside him on a trail at Rockin' River Ranch State Park

At select Arizona state parks, a new kind of outdoor experience is taking shape…built on access, independence, and adventure! Arizona State Parks and Trails is proud to launch the Arizona Adaptive Mobility Program (AAMP) designed to help visitors with mobility limitations experience the beauty of Arizona’s outdoor spaces that were once out of reach. With the help of innovative adaptive off-road mobility devices from TerrainHopper, more people can explore, discover, and connect with the outdoors. Because everyone deserves the chance to explore Arizona’s natural places!

These electric-powered devices are designed to navigate sand, rocks, hills, and uneven ground, opening the door to meaningful outdoor experiences with family and friends. Additional devices will be introduced at more parks in the coming months, expanding access across Arizona.

Hoppers for Heroes, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to expanding outdoor accessibility, raised nearly $300,000 to donate 10 TerrainHoppers to Arizona State Parks and Trails. The availability of TerrainHoppers will make existing trails in the selected parks immediately accessible. The donation includes ongoing maintenance for the equipment, as well as training on its usage.

Who this program is for

This program is designed for visitors with mobility impairments who cannot easily navigate natural terrain using standard mobility devices. If you’ve ever wanted to go beyond paved paths and experience the sights, sounds, and freedom of the outdoors, this program is for you.

Participants must be age 8+ and complete a simple pre-certification process before getting started. Trail advocates must accompany all participants and must be 18+.
