The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) will begin accepting applications for the Route 66 Historic Revitalization Program on Oct. 1, 2026. To assist eligible applicants, SHPO will host three in-person workshops in Winslow, Williams, and Kingman from Oct. 13-15.

The Route 66 Historic Revitalization Program is supported in part by a Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. The program is designed to help drive economic development in rural areas through rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic properties along Arizona’s iconic Route 66 corridor.

“These grants provide a significant opportunity to rehabilitate historic properties along Arizona’s 385-mile stretch of Route 66,” said State Historic Preservation Officer Kathryn Leonard. “We encourage partners in the iconic travel corridor to apply. Through our upcoming workshops, SHPO staff are committed to helping applicants reach their preservation goals and boost economic development through tourism along the Mother Road.”

Grants of up to $100,000 are available to local, county, state, and tribal governments, as well as nonprofits and commercial businesses. Eligible projects must be located in rural communities with fewer than 50,000 residents and require a 20% funding match. Properties must be listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and have served as vital hubs for Route 66 travelers.

The SHPO subgrant program also provides technical and planning support through the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, Local First Arizona, and the Arizona Preservation Foundation.
