Patagonia Lake State Park Marks 50-Year Anniversary

March 25, 2025

PHOENIX – Southern Arizona's popular Patagonia Lake State Park will celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 1, 2025. This amazing destination is one of Arizona's hidden gems.

Patagonia Lake State Park receives more than 235,000 visitors annually and is the fourth most-visited state park in Arizona. Known for its scenic beauty and variety of outdoor recreation activities, the park offers boating, swimming, and fishing on the 260-acre lake, along with hiking and birding in the adjacent Sonoita Creek State Natural Area. More than 60% of visitors come to RV camp, and the park hosts nature programs like guided hikes, bird walks, and boat tours during the winter months as well as annual events like the 30th Mariachi Festival taking place on May 17, 2025.

"From rolling hills and diverse wildlife to on-the-water fun, secluded boat-in campsites and cozy cabins, Patagonia Lake is a cherished oasis in southern Arizona," said Arizona State Parks and Trails Executive Director Bob Broscheid. "We're proud to celebrate 50 years of this incredible park and look forward to welcoming visitors for decades more."

As a recreation destination, Patagonia Lake State Park contributes to the local economy through visitor spending on groceries, gas, dining, and other commodities. Over the years, the park has enhanced its facilities with upgrades such as electric and water hookups at all campsites, beach area improvements, cabins, and new restrooms.

Upgrades currently underway at the park include the installation of three new restrooms and shower buildings at the campground, beach, and cabin areas, as well as infrastructural improvements to the park's wastewater facility. Park operations—including ranger staffing, clean facilities, and safe recreational areas—are supported by day-use entry and camping fees, retail sales, and annual pass purchases. Arizona State Parks and Trails receives no general fund (taxpayer) dollars for the operations of its parks.

Patagonia Lake began as a community-driven effort in the 1960s when local citizens formed the Lake Patagonia Recreation Association, acquired the land, and built recreation facilities. The park’s rapid success led to the need for additional support. Following a feasibility study and master plan, the Arizona Legislature approved the acquisition of Patagonia Lake, which Governor Jack Williams signed into law in 1974. The park officially opened on April 1, 1975.
