Arizona State Parks and Trails Reminds Visitors to Prioritize Safety this Memorial Day Weekend

May 23, 2024

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, park rangers at Arizona’s state parks are excited to welcome visitors recreating during the unofficial start of summer. Whether camping, having a cookout, a day at the beach, or boating on one of Arizona’s beautiful lakes, Arizona State Parks and Trails wants to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. With increased visitation expected at popular destinations, it’s crucial to remember essential safety practices.

When boating, ensure everyone on board has a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and children 12 years old and under must wear them anytime the boat is underway. Personal flotation devices are the simplest and most effective way to save lives in the water. Days on the lake are only fun when everyone is safe. Do not drink while operating a boat—operating a boat while under the influence is dangerous and illegal. Find more boating safety information at AZStateParks.com/Boating-Safety.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for extreme heat. Hydration is critical, even if you do not feel thirsty. Know and respect your physical limits when engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking or biking.

Wildfires have already been sparking across Arizona and fire safety is paramount. Check for fire restrictions in the area you’re recreating this holiday weekend. If campfires are permitted in the local area, never leave them unattended, and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving. In addition, avoid parking vehicles or using equipment on dry grass, as the heat from engines can spark fires, and ensure your tow chains are not dragging as sparks can easily ignite roadside brush.

"We want everyone to enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities Arizona has to offer," said Michelle Thompson, deputy assistant director of Communications and Research of Arizona State Parks and Trails. "By following these safety guidelines, you can help ensure a fun and safe holiday weekend for you and your loved ones."

For a memorable holiday weekend, recreate responsibly at one of Arizona’s stunning state parks. If you’re looking for less crowded destinations, visit Lyman Lake State Park in the White Mountains or Alamo Lake State Park near Wenden for exciting boating opportunities, or make a last-minute camping reservation at Homolovi State Park near Winslow, where wildflowers are blooming and rich history awaits. If aiming for a day trip that’s fun for the whole family, enjoy a visit to a state historic park, like Jerome, Tubac Presidio, or Tombstone Courthouse.
