Delve into the Hopi Culture at Homolovi State Park with Special Tours and Hikes

PHOENIX - Park Rangers at Homolovi State Park in Winslow will present guided walks, hikes and lectures from September through November 2016 that will educate visitors about the sacred Hopi land the park resides on. There will also be Star Parties where you can gaze at the stars through astronomer's telescopes. The cost is Homolovi State Park's Entrance Fee of $7 per vehicle. Tsu'vö Trail - September 17 at 9 a.m.: Enjoy a sunset hike on park trails with a Park Ranger. The tour will be approximately two miles on sandy trails to Diné Point and back. Wear sturdy walking shoes, wear a hat and bring water. Along the trail, participants will be able see petroglyphs from Homolovi's earliest pit-house period.
Petroglyph Tour - September 18 & October 23 at 9 a.m.: Join a Park Ranger in a tour of Homolovi's petroglyph sites. This will require participants to have their own vehicle. Please be prepared for weather and bring plenty of water as the tour will last approximately three hours. There will be approximately 1½ miles of walking on uneven terrain. Homolovi IV Pueblo Guided Tour - September 24, October 1, 8, 9, 16, 22, 29 & November 5 at 10 a.m.: Homolovi IV is the oldest of the Homolovi group of pueblos and is usually closed to the public. A park ranger will lead the tour and discuss the history of the site and the tie to the Hopi people. Attendees will be expected to caravan 12 miles in their own vehicles to Homolovi IV (please note: the last 3/4 mile is dirt road). The walking distance is approximately 1/3 miles on uneven ground (easy trail).
Star Party - September 30, October 14 & November 18 after dark.: Imagine what you can see in the sky at Homolovi State Park. The sky promises spectacular views of stars, constellations, the moon's cratered landscapes, and glimpses of nearby planets. Little Colorado River Valley Astronomy Club will be on hand to answer questions and provide large telescopes. Bring a chair, red illumination flashlight, refreshments, and bug repellent.
Hopi Pottery Talks - October 2 & October 30 at 10 a.m.: Join Park Ranger and Hopi Potter, Gwen Setalla for a discussion and demonstration of traditional Hopi pottery. She will explain how traditional pottery is made and talk about how to recognize authentic made pottery. This will be held at the park's visitor center and will last approximately 1½ hours.
Petrified Wood Walk - October 15 & November 6 at 9 a.m.: Join a Park Ranger on a walk to Homolovi's mini petrified forest. This tour will explore the park's paleontological history. The tour will require about one mile of walking, round trip, across natural landscape, to view an approximately one-acre area of exposed petrified trees. The talk will describe the petrification process, the Triassic period, and the environment as it once was. Meet at the Homolovi State Park Visitor Center.
