Star Party and Dark Sky Special Event

Oracle State Park

Saturday, June 30, 2018   5-10 p.m.

Take a look at the night sky from different points of view with guest speaker Jim O’Connor. His hour-long “Storytelling Sky Tour” program will take place on the upper patio of the Kannally Ranch House. Jim’s core astronomical interest is in how various cultures use the night sky. Learn more about the constellations through Native American cultural stories of the local populations (O'odham, Yaqui, Navajo, Apache). He will share contrasts of how each tribe views the creation of the Earth, sun, and stars and will take participants on a ‘walk’ around the sky to find existing star formations. A reservation is suggested for the sky tour program. All events are free with park admission.

Live Music: Bring your own picnic dinner to the park and enjoy live music from 6:15 p.m.-7:30 p.m. with musician Bruce Carlson on acoustic folk guitar, sharing songs of love, life and landscapes. Bruce is a local singer/songwriter whose style is influenced by Paul Simon and James Taylor. Thanks to Friends of Oracle State Park for sponsoring the music.

Telescope Raffle: Friends of Oracle State park will raffle off two telescopes. Tickets are either $1 or $10, depending on the telescope, and can be purchased in advance in the park office – it is not necessary to be present to win! Tickets will also be available at the Friends of Oracle State Park information/raffle table, beginning at 5 p.m. the day of the event. The telescopes will be on display and they will also have a mix of telescope eyepieces for sale. The raffle winners will be announced later in the evening.

Star Party, 8:30-10:00pm. Stick around for a Star Party with telescopes until 10 p.m., thanks to the Oracle Dark Skies Committee and Saddlebrooke SkyGazers Club.
