Volunteers Needed at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

(Phoenix, Arizona - August 4, 2014) - Park volunteer opportunities are now available at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. The positions are available for those interested in working near Payson, Ariz.

Volunteers are a vital and integral part of the programs at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. Volunteering at the park is a unique experience because of the opportunity to connect yourself and the visitor to a rarely seen environment. Volunteers significantly increase the services and enjoyment available to visitors. Volunteer uniforms are provided. Volunteers receive free admission to all state parks after 50 hours service, receive gifts for various service levels and receive invitations to Arizona State Parks' Annual Volunteer Recognition & training events.

Below are details on the volunteer positions currently available at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. There are some training and qualification requirements.

Position Title: Park Ambassador
Service Summary: To assist visitors by answering a variety of park specific questions, interpreting park rules and policies, patrolling the park to identify safety hazards, rules violations and insure visitor safety. Other duties may be assigned.
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week. Actual days and times will be coordinated between the volunteer and the volunteer program management team.

Training:

  • Volunteer orientation
  • State of Arizona Mandated Training for Volunteers (Blood borne Pathogens, Preventing Inappropriate Behavior in the Workplace & Ethics)
  • Park history and geology orientation
  • 2-way radio operation
  • Procedures rules infraction situation
  • How to respond to emergency situations
  • Any other training identified as needed

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate politely and pleasantly with visitors
  • Ability to hike steep & strenuous trails
  • Willingness to respond to emergency situations (accidents, behavioral, etc.)
  • Have good verbal and social skills

Position Title: Gift Shop Volunteer
Service Summary: Initial point of contact with visitors. Welcome visitors to the park. Collect park admission fees. Support the operation of a retail Gift shop. Answer questions about the park. Relate interpretive information on park history, lodge history and other questions. Explain park rules and regulations. Handle public monies.
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours per day. Days and times will be coordinated between the Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteer Management Team.

Training:

  • Volunteer Orientation
  • State of Arizona Mandated Training for Volunteers (Blood borne Pathogens, Preventing Inappropriate Behavior in the Workplace & Ethics)
  • Cash Register/park fee structure orientation and training
  • Gift shop orientation, modeling & coaching as needed
  • Park history and geology orientation
  • Qualifications & Requirements:

    • Agree to and sign "Custodians of Public Money" form (ARS 35-301)
    • Volunteer Orientation and be familiar with park facilities and trails
    • Be able to operate a computerized cash register
    • Ability and willingness to handle money and make correct change
    • Ability to cope with stress of a very busy and fast moving environment
    • Ability to be polite and pleasant to visitors in a stressful situation

    Position Title: Maintenance - Gardener
    Service Summary: Care of the gardens around the lodge and throughout the park. Includes planting, watering, weeding and other garden maintenance. May include creating and designing of gardens. May include preventative measures against garden pests. Other garden/landscape duties may be needed.
    Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

    Training:

    • Volunteer Orientation
    • State of Arizona Mandated Training for Volunteers (Blood borne Pathogens, Preventing Inappropriate Behavior in the Workplace & Ethics)
    • Training in tools, equipment & other job related procedures and details
    • TNBSP park orientation
    • Radio procedures, operation and language requirements
    • Other training deemed necessary to the successful and safe completion of the job duties

    Qualifications & Requirements:

    • Basic interest & understanding of landscaping & maintenance
    • Bending and lifting needed in performing gardening functions
    • Ability & willingness to work with a variety of hand tools
    • Ability to work as a member of a team

    Position Title: Maintenance - Landscaping
    Service Summary: Care for the blackberry bushes, trees and other vegetation in the park. Includes pruning, watering and harvesting fruit and berries that grow in the park. Includes spraying trees and bushes to reduce/prevent animal and insect damage. Includes maintenance of the streambeds that flow into the park from the natural springs. Other maintenance/landscaping duties may be needed.
    Time Commitment: 4 hours per week

    • State of Arizona Mandated Training for Volunteers (Blood borne Pathogens, Preventing Inappropriate Behavior in the Workplace & Ethics)
    • Training in tools, equipment & other job related procedures and details
    • TNBSP park orientation
    • Radio procedures, operation and language requirements
    • Other training deemed necessary to the successful and safe completion of the job duties

    Qualifications & Requirements:

    • Ability to perform heavy lifting and physical labor
    • Ability and willingness to work with a variety of power and hand tools
    • Ability to work as a member of a team
    • A general working knowledge of maintenance skills

    Position Title: Maintenance Volunteer
    Service Summary: Maintenance volunteers assist the park in areas of general park maintenance, minor construction, trail building & maintenance, grounds keeping and other maintenance duties as they might arise. These duties could include painting, plumbing, minor electrical and other building & grounds maintenance duties. Volunteers will not be asked to perform tasks beyond their level of knowledge and/or comfort.
    Time Commitment: 4 hours per week. Actual days & times will be coordinated with Volunteer Program Coordinator
