(Phoenix, Arizona - March 11, 2009) - Oracle State Park offers a variety of nature events in March and April, 2009 including guided hikes and tours, music and more.
Wednesday, March 11: History Docent Training, 9am to noon. Learn more about the oral history record of the Kannally family and prepare to be a tour guide of the historic Kannally Ranch House. Call for more information or a reservation, (520) 896-2425.
Wednesday, March 18: Naturalist Training: Plants of Oracle State Park, 9am to noon. Volunteer Kathie Jordan will lead a plant identification class at the Kannally Ranch House, followed by a trail walk to name the trees, bushes, shrubs and emerging wildflowers along the trail. This class is open to volunteers and the public (free with the park entrance fee). Call for more information or a reservation, (520) 896-2425.
Saturday, March 21: Wild Food Walk, 12pm. Ranger Canyon Gagnon will lead a trail walk to learn more about the edible resources of the park, including acorns, mesquite beans, manzanita berries, wildflowers and more. One hour duration. Bring a hat and water. No reservation necessary; free with park entrance fee.
Sunday, March 29: Music in the Park annual concert series begins, from 2-4pm on the upper patio of the Kannally Ranch House, with a performance by latin band, Imagen Norteno. Concerts continue once a month through June. Tickets are $10 per adult. A Series Ticket for $35 includes reserved parking at the ranch house; the first 50 series ticket holders also get reserved seats at each of the four concerts. Sunday, April 19, Aldo Leopold Earth Day Celebration, 11am-3pm. Speaker and hikes with Aldo Leopold readings. Learn more about the "Father of wildlife ecology" and author of A Sand County Almanac, whose legacy inspires discussion of environmental ethics and wise use of land and water resources. More details to be announced.
Sunday, April 26: Music in the Park, 2-4pm. Kip Calahan performs Patsy Kline style western tunes and more on the upper patio of the Kannally Ranch House. Tickets $10 in advance or the day of the event. (520) 896-2425.
Ongoing Weekends: Guided Tours of the Historic Kannally Ranch House, each Saturday, Sunday and holidays, beginning at 10am and again at 2pm; 45-minute duration. The four level Mediterranean revival style adobe ranch house was built from 1929-33 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours are also scheduled by reservation, call (520) 896-2425.
