(Phoenix, Arizona - January 27, 2009) - Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park and Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park will have festivities that coincide with the Yuma Crossing Day activities in Old Town Yuma on Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Yuma Crossing Day highlights the historical era of Yuma's past from the arrival of the first Spaniards in the 1500s to the mid-1900s through living history re-enactments. Attractions include historical tours, historic re-enactments, Cocopah exhibits, a fry bread sale and an arts and crafts sale.
One of the highlights of this year's event is a musical production by home school students from the Jool (pronounced "joy") Club of Yuma. Students from first grade through high school will perform in an original production of "Crossing the River." It is the story of Juan Batista de Anza's historic journey from Tubac to San Francisco in 1775. The play highlights the meeting of Chief Palma of the Yuma tribal community and Anza preparing to take the early settlers across the Colorado River into California. Bring the whole family to enjoy this original adaptation written by the students and performed at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park. The park will also be offering guided tours at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The excitement continues at Yuma Territorial Prison where visitors can get a look at the life of the prisoners during a guided tour of the prison at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. A volunteer information booth will also be available for visitors that might be interested in volunteering at the park.
