Come if you Dare ... “Haunted Tours” at Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park October 25

(Phoenix, Arizona - October 8, 2008) - Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park hosts a special night of "Haunted Tours" on Saturday, October 25, 2008 beginning at 6 p.m.

The Ghostwalker of Yuma Prison invites you on a nighttime stroll of Yuma's most infamous site. Restless spirits and wraiths inhabit the dark cell, the new yard and corridor. You will also meet the Yuma Spirithunters, paranormal investigators.

The first seven inmates moved into the facility on July 1, 1876. The Prison continued in operation for 33 years when, due to overcrowding, all inmates were moved to a new facility in Florence, Arizona. The prisoner's crimes ranged from murder to polygamy (grand larceny was the most frequent crime committed).

Some of the most infamous prisoners include the legendary stagecoach robber Pearl Hart. A fellow by the name of Rose, sentenced to life for murder, refused to leave the prison grounds after he was paroled by Governor Murphy. On October 8, 1901, prison officials assisted him through the prison gates. Seven inmates died during an escape attempt known as the Gates Riot, which was not the only unsuccessful escape witnessed at the prison, although it certainly was the deadliest. Come see if they are still lurking in the cells!

Participants must have a reservation for a tour. Call Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park at (928) 783-4771 to make a reservation or for more information. Admission is $5 for ages 14 and older. Children aged 13 and younger are free but it may be too intense for young children. Take I-8 to Yuma, take Exit 1 to Giss Parkway, turn at Prison Hill Road. The park is open daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
