Cultural History

The Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park area was once home to the Salado, who are believed to have been a branch of the Anasazi culture of northern Arizona. They moved south from the Little Colorado River area and into the Gila River area by 1300 AD. The Salado culture lasted until about 1450 AD in the Gila River drainage before it disappeared.  Pottery, multi-roomed pueblos constructed of stone and adobe, bedrock mortars, and rock shelters can be found in the area.
