Welcome to the Arizona Parks Update, Joining us today is Patricia Moreno, Assistant Park Manager at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Thanks for joining us today Patricia.

We’re talking about Anza Days that will be coming up on October 20th and the 21st. Can you tell us a little bit about this event please?
Moreno:
Anza Days is a
celebrations of Captain Juan Batista de Anza II and the Expedition to establish the Presidio at San Francisco. And we usually hold it around mid-October because that is when they actually left the Tubac area and so it's the anniversary of the event.

Okay,
and some of the activities that you guys will be doing that day
is a living history presentation?
Moreno:
Yes, we do some living history presentations, the Tubaquenos who are the people of Tubac which is the Parks Living History Program will be performing from 1 - 4 p.m. each day. And they do Spanish colonial life such as food to the area. A curadera who tells how herbs were used as medicines, weavers, miners, spinners and so forth. We also have Rick Collins who is going to be interpreting the Spanish Soldado. He comes to us a Spanish Soldado who was a soldier at the time and brings his gear with him: saddle, leather jacket and so forth. He explains what is was like to be a Spanish Soldier on the frontier at that time. Anza will joining us both days this year from 2-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday as well for the ride.

Also there will be some programs for the kids, tell us about those.
Moreno:
The National Juan Batista de Anza Trail will be doing the Junior Ranger Program in the schoolhouse and it’s called Journeys and Challenges. The object is to go across on a large board in the schoolhouse. You would stop at each point that they stopped along at the trek and try to determine how you would navigate the challenges that they did on the expedition. The children get a Junior Ranger Badge from the National Trail for that. We also have Tumacacori Mission who will be doing pen and ink signatures so that they can try their hand at using the old fashion pen and ink. Our own Marty and Marlo will be doing leather work and leather camping.

Great! I understand that this year’s event is complementary to the visiting public courtesy of the Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona.
Moreno:
Yes. It is. And that should make it a better experience especially for families who usually could not afford to come to the event. Now they can bring everybody with them and enjoy all of the things that we have to offer.
